What are lactic acid bacteria?

12 strains of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria in one capsule

Lactic acid bacteria are bacteria that ferment sugar into lactic acid. This very process turns milk into yoghurt and white cabbage into sauerkraut. They include the genera Lactobacillus, Lactococcus and Streptococcus, among others. Bifidobacteria form a genus of their own but are often mentioned in the same breath because of their similar metabolism. Both belong to the bacteria that humans have always encountered through fermented foods.

Our lactic acid bacteria capsules contain 12 of these strains in a single formulation, with around 20 billion CFU per daily serving. Acacia fibre serves as the carrier and the capsule shell is made of beef gelatine. This gives you the variety of fermented foods in a simple, taste-neutral form.

Information about Probiotic Supplement Advanced – 12-Strain Capsules with 20 Billion CFU

About the product

Probiotic Complex Advanced is a multi-strain probiotic with 12 bacterial strains from the genera Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Lactococcus and Streptococcus. Instead of relying on a single strain, the complex combines bacteria found in different fermented foods and declares the count for each one. A daily serving of two capsules provides around 20 billion CFU in total.

Which 12 strains are in this multi-strain probiotic?

Per daily serving (2 capsules):

  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG: 5 billion CFU
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus: 2.625 billion CFU
  • Lactococcus lactis: 1.925 billion CFU
  • Streptococcus thermophilus: 1.9 billion CFU
  • Bifidobacterium lactis: 1.5 billion CFU
  • Lactobacillus gasseri: 1.5 billion CFU
  • Lactobacillus plantarum: 1.5 billion CFU
  • Lactobacillus casei: 1.125 billion CFU
  • Lactobacillus reuteri: 1.05 billion CFU
  • Ligilactobacillus salivarius: 1.05 billion CFU
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum: 0.4 billion CFU
  • Bifidobacterium breve: 0.4 billion CFU

The largest share is Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, one of the most extensively researched bacterial strains of all.

What does CFU mean?

CFU stands for colony-forming units. The figure shows how many bacteria capable of multiplying are contained in a serving. Because CFU is the standard unit for bacterial cultures, products can be compared directly on this basis. We state it not only as a total but for each of the 12 strains individually.

Lactic acid bacteria in traditional diets

Fermentation is one of the oldest ways of preserving food. Sauerkraut, kefir, yoghurt, raw-milk cheese and pickled vegetables owe their flavour and shelf life to lactic acid bacteria. In traditional diets such foods were on the table every day. Our capsules continue this tradition and bring together bacteria from very different fermentations in one product.

Storage and shelf life

Live bacterial cultures are sensitive to heat and moisture. Keep the capsules dry, closed and at a maximum of 25 °C. You don’t need a fridge – because of the humidity it is actually unfavourable.

Composition and quality

Besides the 12 bacterial strains, each capsule contains acacia fibre as a carrier and magnesium stearate so that the powder can be filled evenly. The capsule shell is made of beef gelatine. The product contains no other ingredients such as flavourings, sweeteners or colourings.

Who are these probiotic capsules for?

These probiotic capsules are meant for anyone who wants to include lactic acid bacteria in their everyday life in a simple form, for example because fermented foods rarely feature on their menu. If transparency matters to you, you can see the exact count for every strain. As the capsule shell is made of beef gelatine, the product is not vegetarian or vegan.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG?

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, LGG for short, is a lactic acid bacterium isolated in the 1980s by the US researchers Sherwood Gorbach and Barry Goldin. The letters GG stand for their surnames. Since a reclassification in 2020, the species is officially called Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus. LGG is one of the most extensively researched bacterial strains and, with 5 billion CFU per daily serving, makes up the largest share of our complex.

What does CFU mean in probiotics?

CFU stands for colony-forming units. The figure shows how many bacteria capable of multiplying are contained in a serving. Our Probiotic Complex Advanced contains around 20 billion CFU per daily serving of two capsules, declared individually for each of the 12 strains.

When and how should I take probiotics?

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily with sufficient liquid, with or without food. You can start with one capsule and increase to two if well tolerated. One tub of 60 capsules therefore lasts 30 to 60 days. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Do probiotics need to be refrigerated?

Not these ones. Keep the capsules dry, closed and at a maximum of 25 °C. We advise against the fridge, because moisture can get to the capsules there.

What other ingredients do the capsules contain?

Acacia fibre as a carrier, magnesium stearate as a processing aid for even filling, and a capsule shell made of beef gelatine. No flavourings, sweeteners or colourings.

Are these probiotic capsules vegetarian or vegan?

No. The capsule shell is made of beef gelatine, so the product is neither vegetarian nor vegan.
