A carotenoid from algae

What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid, a fat-soluble pigment like beta-carotene or lutein. It belongs to the xanthophyll subgroup and is responsible for the red colour of salmon, prawns and krill. These animals don’t make astaxanthin themselves; they take it in through algae and small crustaceans.

The richest natural source is the freshwater alga Haematococcus pluvialis. Under stress, astaxanthin turns it deep red. For food supplements the alga is cultivated and harvested, and the astaxanthin is then extracted. ASTAFIT® is an astaxanthin ingredient obtained from this alga.

Information about Astaxanthin Supplement 4 mg – Natural ASTAFIT® Capsules from Algae

About the product

Natural astaxanthin from microalgae

The freshwater alga Haematococcus pluvialis is the richest natural source of astaxanthin. When it comes under stress, for example from intense light, it stores the red pigment. Our ingredient ASTAFIT® is obtained from this alga.

From plankton to salmon

In nature, astaxanthin travels up the food chain. Small crustaceans such as krill eat the algae, and salmon eat the crustaceans. That’s why krill, prawns and wild salmon are pink to red. If you rarely eat them, you take in hardly any astaxanthin.

Daily serving: how to take astaxanthin capsules

Each capsule contains 4 mg astaxanthin, and the daily serving of two capsules 8 mg. As astaxanthin is fat-soluble, the capsules are best taken with a meal. This astaxanthin supplement is intended for adults. A jar of 60 capsules lasts 30 days.

Why we make no health claims

Astaxanthin is widely researched and even more widely praised. However, health claims for it are not authorised in the EU or Switzerland. So we stick to what we can verify: source, ingredient and content.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a red, fat-soluble pigment from the carotenoid family. It is produced by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis and gives salmon, prawns and krill their colour.

Where does the astaxanthin in these capsules come from?

From the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. We use the ingredient ASTAFIT®, a natural astaxanthin from this alga.

How much astaxanthin per day?

The daily serving is two capsules, providing 8 mg astaxanthin in total. Do not exceed this amount, so don’t combine it with other products containing astaxanthin.

When to take astaxanthin?

With a meal that contains some fat, because astaxanthin is fat-soluble. You can take the two capsules together or spread over the day, each time with enough liquid.

What are the benefits of astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is the subject of a lot of research. However, no health claims for astaxanthin have been authorised in the EU or Switzerland so far. That’s why we make no promises about its effects and instead describe what’s in the capsules and where it comes from.

Why is salmon pink?

Because of astaxanthin. Wild salmon eat small crustaceans that have taken in astaxanthin from algae. The pigment is stored in the muscle and colours it pink to red.

Is this astaxanthin vegan?

Yes. The capsules contain rice flour, astaxanthin from algae and the glazing agent hydroxypropyl cellulose – no animal-derived ingredients.

How long does one jar last?

One jar contains 60 capsules. At two capsules a day, it lasts 30 days.
